Miramichi, New Brunswick — More Miramichi riding students will have an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and earn money for the upcoming school year thanks to a Government of Canada initiative. Ms. Tilly O’Neill Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi, made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.

“Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government is increasing funding to Canada Summer Jobs, to create jobs for students and help them develop their skills,” said Ms. Tilly O’Neill Gordon. “Our government is happy to give a hand-up to students who are eager for a tangible work experience and who would like to contribute to their local community and economy.”

Canada’s Economic Action Plan increased funding by $10 million in 2009, and is again providing an additional $10 million in 2010, for Canada Summer Jobs. The initiative provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create summer jobs and opportunities for students. It benefits the needs of the employer, the students and their communities.

The Government of Canada is committed to helping students in Miramichi. This year, through the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, hundreds of agreements will be signed and nearly 300 summer jobs will be created for local students. 

“Our government is helping Canada’s youth succeed now and in the future,” said Ms. Tilly O’Neill Gordon.
