Additional Funding for Summer Jobs in Miramichi
May 12, 2009

As part of its Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is increasing funding for student employment programs in the federal public service so that Canadian students across the country can gain job skills and experience.

Tilly O’Neill Gordon, MP for Miramichi, is pleased to announce the creation of 290 summer jobs for students in her riding.

Miramichi has received $704,000 in funding, and the 213 projects submitted before the program deadline have all been approved.

“The public and private sectors, and not-for-profit agencies are receiving funding, which will enable students to benefit from a variety of jobs,” explained Ms. O’Neill Gordon. Funding will be allocated to 129 not-for-profit agencies, and 84 public-sector organizations and private-sector businesses.

“I would especially like to thank the private and public sectors for their tremendous participation in the program,” she said. “Through their job-creation efforts, students will get valuable work experience.”

Not-for-profit employers receive 100% of wage costs for students hired for the summer, while public-sector and private-sector employers receive 50% of wage costs.

“This program will benefit students as well as the businesses and organizations that hire them,” said O’Neill Gordon. “I am proud that our government is taking action to help businesses encourage students to enter the labour market.”
