Miramichi, New Brunswick, March 18, 2011—Seniors living across the Miramichi can anticipate new opportunities to participate in and contribute to their communities thanks to Government of Canada support for four (4) local projects.
Mrs. Tilly O’Neill Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi, made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, and the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of State (Seniors).
“The Government of Canada is improving the lives of seniors, and is proud to support local organizations with the same goal,” said Mrs. O’Neill Gordon. “These projects will encourage seniors to contribute their skills, knowledge and experience for the benefit of the entire community.”
“Today’s seniors know the importance of being active and staying involved in their communities,” said Minister Fantino. “The New Horizons for Seniors Program is just one example of how we are helping seniors make a positive difference in their own lives and in those of the people around them.”
Mrs. Tilly O’Neill Gordon made the announcement that the following organizations in the riding of Miramichi received funding:
Chatham Pioneer Senior Citizens Club Inc. of Miramichi received $10,587 to replace flooring, windows, and chairs and repair the fire exit, in order to continue to provide dances and other social activities to seniors.
Club de l'âge d'or Notre Dame du Portage Inc, of Haut Rivière-du-Portage received $13,263 to replace tables, the air conditioning system in order to continue to provide dances, cards games and other social activities to seniors.
Kouchibouguac Community Centre Inc. of Kouchibouguac received $25,000 to replace tables, chairs, and the stove and refrigerator as well as renovate the bathroom and the floors so that seniors can continue to participate in games and social events which include meals.
Tabusintac Royal Canadian Legion of Tabunsintac received $25,000 to replace wall panelling, deep fryers, kitchen stove and kitchen fan system tables and chairs so that seniors can continue to participate in meals, card parties and music events.
It is some of 810 projects that were approved through the 2010–2011 Capital Assistance Call for Proposals, providing over $10.6 million.
The Government of Canada is making enhancements to the Program. These enhancements will allow a broader array of organizations to develop a greater variety of projects to meet the changing needs of communities.
