Happy Canada Day!
June 24, 2009

Ottawa, Ontario – July 1st is Canada Day! It marks the day that Canada became a confederation under the British North America Act, which came into force on July 1, 1867.

MP for Miramichi Tilly O’Neill Gordon invites everyone in her riding to gather together to participate in the many celebrations.

“Canada Day gives us the opportunity to gather together in our communities across the country and proudly celebrate all that we have in common. It’s an opportunity to celebrate our success, a success built on the bold vision and the common values of our ancestors,” she said.

Many Canada Day celebrations are taking place in Miramichi this year. The federal government awarded $23,396 to the following 13 organizations for Canada Day events, to which you are all invited: The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 61, in Neguac; the Friends of Beaubears Island in Miramichi; the Miramichi Regional Multicultural Association; the Historic Chatham Business District Corp. in Miramichi; the Burnt Church / New Jersey Recreation Council; the Kouchibouguac Community Center Inc.; the Collette Chamber of Commerce; the Tabusintac Local Service District; the Neguac Canada Day Committee; the Village of Belledune Canada Day Committee; the City of Miramichi; the Village of Blackville; and the Rogersville Canada Day Committee.

Canada Day is a time to reflect on our heritage, preserved and passed on by our poets, artists, authors and performers. It is a time to celebrate our scientific achievements and entrepreneurial successes and to commemorate our history, a history that becomes more moving and fascinating with every chapter.

“Canada Day is an opportunity for all Canadians to be patriotic. When I look at the people that make up our communities, we have every reason to look to the future with confidence and enthusiasm.”

“I hope you will have the chance to participate in Canada Day celebrations this year! Have fun and be safe!” said O’Neill Gordon.
