International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
November 24, 2009

Ottawa, Ontario — Tilly O’Neill Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi highlights the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

“Today, on this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, let’s take a moment to think about the many girls and women for whom violence and the threat of violence is a daily occurrence,” said O’Neill Gordon.

“We have to fight against attitudes and behaviours that tolerate, excuse or turn a blind eye to violence against women. We also need to increase funding for victims services.”

Violence against women in Canada knows no boundaries.  Indeed, Canadians need look no further than their own communities and sometimes their own families to find instances of violence against women.

“On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, I encourage all Canadians to join together to stop violence against women across this country and around the world. Violence against women is never acceptable, never excusable and never tolerable,” concluded Mrs. O’Neill Gordon.
