MP O’Neill-Gordon Announces Funding for Miramichi Folksong Festival
April 20, 2010

Ottawa (Ontario) - The Miramichi Folksong Festival received a grant of $6,700 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program for its 53rd edition which will be held from August 1 to 6, 2010.

This program, created by our Government in 2007, provides funding for local festivals and historic anniversaries.  Since its creation, the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage Program has increasingly gained popularity.  The number of eligible proposals has increased substantially this year, compared to previous years. This is due to the fact that application procedures have been simplified.

« One of the ways in which communities come together is by celebrating events to which we can all relate and that touch our lives.  By doing so, we become stronger and more united and, in turn, that helps strengthen our sense of identity as Canadians.  We will have an opportunity to do this at the Miramichi Folksong Festival.  I am looking forward to attending the Festival and celebrating with as many of you as I can. » Said MP O’Neill Gordon.

Festival activities include indoor and outdoor musical performances by local artists, with opportunities for the public to meet with the artists. The performances will mainly be held at the Kin Center and the Civic Center.

The Government of Canada is pleased and proud to be able to partner in activities that celebrate our history, arts, and heritage.  These help us understand who we are and where we’ve come from and to do so in fellowship with our friends, neighbours, and families.  These events — whether marking an important historic moment or celebrating our Canadian culture — also provide a boost to our local businesses and help support our local artists and artisans.
