Ottawa (Ontario) – Another session of Parliament is beginning in Ottawa after a busy year. Tilly O’Neill Gordon, MP for Miramichi, had a number of accomplishments in 2010 including securing the transfer of the Public Works and Government Services Canada Centre of Expertise, which will create 550 new jobs in Miramichi, along with federal funding for the expansion of the Atlantic Institution, in Renous, which will create dozens of new jobs for corrections officers as well as nurses, psychologists, maintenance staff and clerks.
In this 3rd Session of the 40th Parliament, MP O’Neill Gordon will serve as a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health (HESA) and returns to the Standing Committee on the Status of Women (FEWO), as vice-chair. In the absence of the Chair, Tilly even chaired her first meeting yesterday morning.
“I am delighted to serve on the Health Committee. Health matters to everyone. I am especially pleased to return to the Committee on the Status of Women, and to take on the challenge of serving as vice-chair,” said O’Neill Gordon.
In addition to duties in the House, each MP must serve on at least two House of Commons committees. A committee is a group of MPs or MPs and senators created to examine any matter referred by the Senate or House of Commons, including bills. There are various types of committees: standing, legislative, special, joint, Committees of the Whole and the Liaison Committee. For more information about committees, click here.
