MP Tilly O’Neill-Gordon highlights importance of International Volunteer Day
December 02, 2008

Ottawa, Ontario – On Friday, December 5, we will celebrate International Volunteer Day. For MP Tilly O’Neill Gordon, it is an opportunity to recognize the exceptional work of Canadian volunteers around the world.

As you may know, over 75,000 Canadians have volunteered around the world for over 50 years. In 2008 alone, over 2,000 Canadians volunteered their time to help other communities.

“It is important to pay tribute to these volunteers who dedicate themselves to helping developing countries by working to combat poverty, improve health and living conditions and promote the rights of women,” said Ms. O’Neill Gordon.

According to a recent study, the work of volunteers around the world has positive repercussions not only abroad but also at home, because they are more likely to help people in their own communities.

“Canada has always helped poor countries, and our government recognizes the importance of volunteering,” said Ms. O’Neill Gordon. “As the Member of Parliament for Miramichi, I am proud to recognize the dedication of all the volunteers in New Brunswick, especially those from Miramichi.”

“Volunteers will always be the lifeblood of non-profit organizations, which are instrumental to community development,” she said.
