Miramichi (New-Brunswick) – Tilly O’Neill Gordon, MP for Miramichi, announced the Government of Canada’s support to communities hosting celebrations during the Olympic Torch Relay’s journey across our country.
“When the Torch comes through our town, the Olympic spirit will touch each and every one of us, O’Neill Gordon said.
The Torch will visit Miramichi on November 27, 2009 around 11:20 a.m. for a community celebration at James M. Hill Memorial High School Field.
The Government of Canada is providing Miramichi with $15,000 for the local celebration.
“I was excited when I was told that the Olympic Torch Relay would be stopping in Miramichi on its journey across Canada,” said Mayor Gerry Cormier. “We have met with a representative of the Olympic Torch Relay Team and it looks like quite a show. This will be an opportunity for Miramichi to show the rest of Canada the pride we have in our athletes and the Games themselves.”
Funding to COMMUNITY will be used to highlight local talent and artists, provide interactive activities to engage youth and other individuals.
Across the country, each local celebration will be different, offering unique opportunities for all Canadians to welcome the Olympic Flame. The events and activities organized by each celebration community will highlight Canadian pride in our athletes, culture and country.
“The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will be the longest domestic relay in Olympic history,” said the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport). “The Olympic Flame will be carried by 12,000 torchbearers through more than 1 000 communities across our country with.
